The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has hosted a free business fair in Cumbria aimed at those looking to set up their own company.
The event, in association with WCDA and devised by Colmena, offered essential advice on knowledge-based business start-ups and gave those with managerial or technical backgrounds the perfect platform to learn more about business strategy and communicate with business support providers.
Business people in the West Cumbrian area were also given the opportunity to see and hear about UCLan’s new business incubation facility that comprises teaching rooms, lecture theatres, library and laboratory space, four small tenanted offices and 12 hot-desks which can be used on more informal basis.

Peter Rawling, UCLan’s Business Incubator Manager, said: “The facility has been specifically designed to provide a supportive environment for small business and entrepreneurs to develop sustainable businesses.
“It is an unfortunate fact that many people in the region are finding themselves being made redundant. Rather than see their talents wasted or not fully utilised, they want to use their skills they’ve gained from many years experience of working for the larger companies in the area and now provide consultancy services or develop innovative new business ideas.”
The event was specifically designed for these people and had a range of exhibiting companies that provided services to business that ranged from legal and financial advice to corporate photography and telecommunications.
One of the events exhibitors was WCDA’s “Link Start Extra” team whose programme provides six days intensive training and then ongoing support to new businesses starting up in Allerdale and Copeland.
As well as the exhibition from local companies, a series of talks throughout the event were provided including “Cost effective marketing techniques” and “How to clinch the deal” from Sarah Craig of Colmena Associates.
The key note speech was given by Dr Rob Rule from Ceramex Ltd who gave an insight into the successful new business ideas he has taken to market and the valuable press coverage and interest that can be gained from an exciting new innovative idea.
The Business Start Up Fair was held on December 8 at UCLan’s Samuel Lindow Building on Westlakes Science & Technology Park in Moor Row.
